Moonkin in Legion: Bye bye pixel butt and eclipse

BlizzCon 2015 is over after two awesome days. I watched the live stream which was very good except for some panels which they didn’t show there, so I had to read about it later on Twitter and different WoW fan sites. The Legion panels were very exciting and they announced many changes and updates to druids like Moonkin Form update, info about the artifact weapons, class halls and other druid changes. Druids have a lot to look forward to in Legion.

The biggest news for me was the moonkin model update. If you’ve read some of my older posts about moonkin then you know how long I’ve been waiting for this update. I sent a question to Tom Chilton at last year’s BlizzCon where I asked about when we would get an update to the moonkin model and his answer was:

We have given a lot of love to druids over time with their different forms, so the moonkin will have to wait a little bit longer

Then, in September this year, Lore wrote the following on the US forums:

LoreMoonkin
Our current plan is that Moonkin Form will indeed receive a high-res model update in Legion.

They indicated that it wouldn’t be a major update, it would still look like the old moonkin form.

Yesterday at the World of Warcraft: Legion – World and Content Overview panel they showed us this picture of the old and the new moonkin form. Julian Morris, lead game designer, said the new model is faithful to the old original but with a ton of character detail and  really expressive.

WoWPanel058

I’m very happy with what we’ve seen so far because I like the moonkin form, it’s the reason I wanted to start playing a druid when I first leveled one back in The Burning Crusade. All I wanted was an update like the ones bear and cat form got in Cataclysm and it looks like that’s what we’re getting now.

There are a few things I really hope and expect them to add. I want the moonkin form to have unique features for each race, like different looking horns or antlers, maybe fangs on the troll moonkin, different colors and shades, maybe some other features inspired by races and similar to what the cat and bear models got. I also want the colors of the feathers to change depending on which hair or skin color you choose. Like for example if you as a troll choose a white hair color, then your moonkin model will have white and maybe light grey feathers. So basically just like how the cat and bear models work.

Some pictures of the new model were shared a few days ago after someone datamined the Legion beta

Another form that’s getting a much needed update is the sea lion aquatic form. It will pretty much the same but updated.

Blizzard wrote a post about the druid artifact weapons and we learned much more about them at BlizzCon today, notes from MMO-Champion.

  • Artifact power comes from quest bosses, rare spawns, rare drops, dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, arenas
  • Artifact traits are unlocked by artifact power. You start with some traits unlocked. You first unlock active traits that you put on your bar
  • After the active trait there are more choices, some of them passive. Minor traits have multiple ranks, you have to unlock them all to progress into the tree
  • Eventually you can unlock every trait in the tree. You can keep getting smaller power increases after that, so weapon will get more powerful throughout the expansion.
  • Relics can be socketed into the artifact to increase power. Increases item level and gives bonus ranks to some traits
  • Two types of relics for each weapon
  • You can eventually upgrade your artifact. Dungeon and world content lead up to a big upgrade moment. Upgrade will unlock a new model
  • You can also get other models and colors from different types of gameplay
  • Finish questing zones or do something that is significant to your weapon

You have become one of the greatest Druids in Azeroth, deserving of a weapon not only with power—but with a name.

WoWGSP018

The balance weapon is called Scythe of Elune and the story tells us:

This mystical artifact was created millennia ago from the Staff of Elune and a fang from the wolf demigod Goldrinn. The Scythe of Elune carries a long and unsettling history for druids: those who are not careful enough can easily be overwhelmed by Goldrinn’s spirit, which infuses the scythe. Tied to the origin of the worgen on Azeroth, the scythe is said to possess untold lunar power for the druid with balance enough to keep control.

I think it’s great that each artifact weapon has a story and unique quests, so I’m looking forward to learning more about my weapon and it’s story.

You can read about the restoration, guardian and feral artifact weapons here.

Class halls: The Dreamgrove – a home for druids

There won’t be any garrisons in Legion, but we’ll have class halls which are an area for your class.

  • Class halls needed to be in a location that strongly represents the class. Dreamgrove is in Val’Sharah where druidism was born in Azeroth
  • Druids almost had a class hall already with Moonglade. It gets pretty close to meeting the criteria, welcoming a variety of druids, but it could do a better job of immersing them in nature, welcoming feral and guardian druids more
  • Druids can reach many other natural places in the world very quickly
  • There is class specific content in the halls
Every class will have their own variation of Death Gate to quickly go to their class hall and back
  • Class champions are also found in your class hall. You will unfold their backstory over time and see them in the world
  • You will interact with your Scouting Map in your class hall. It lets you select your starting leveling zone and you come back to it for new content later on
  • You will find a shrine in your class hall to unlock traits and work with your artifact weapon
  • There are lots of features and bonuses in the halls. Some are shared among many classes, such as armor stands to show off tier sets you have earned from previous content

Druid changes – Darkmoon Faire Community Amphitheatre Class Changes Q&A

This panel wasn’t part of the Virtual Ticket, so thanks to Wowhead and Restokin for summarizing the most important points, you can read more on their websites.

I expected to see some changes to the balance spec and I was hoping they would do something about the Eclipse bar because I’ve not been a fan of the changes they did in Warlords of Draenor which is why I have barely played my druid this expansion. I just didn’t like the way the Eclipse just went back and forth all by itself and how I had to constantly stare at that bar to know which spells to use. So these changes made me very happy. We’ll get more info about every class here in a few days.

General:

  • Lots of new talents
  • Base abilities for druids are pruned – less core abilities that enhance other roles
  • New talent – Affinity: A secondary spec, weaker than your main spec. Example: Guardian druid with Balance Affinity has Moonkin Form and can do useful damage.

Moonkin:

  • There have been multiple failures with the balance spec and it’s time for a revamp. Core problem with moonkin is the whole spec is a bar cycle on your UI. You are playing the UI game – that’s done.
  • Eclipse is gone
  • Builders and spenders with different strengths and weaknesses and reasons to use them
  • Focus on DOTs but keeps Moonfire, Sunfire, Starfall
  • Stampeding Roar is gone for moonkin
  • Innervate is returning to moonkins as their specific utility and it can be cast on yourself or other players

What I hope to see at BlizzCon

blizzcon

Blizzard Watch had this as a breakfast topic a while back and I’ve been thinking about it since. What do I hope to see at BlizzCon?

My first thought was that I was a bit disappointed when they announced the next expansion, Legion, at Gamescom. The reason for that is that prefer BlizzCon to be the event they make big announcements at. It feels more special when we’re all excited and gathered either at BlizzCon or in front of our TVs or computers watching the live stream and waiting for the big reveal. But that’s not what Blizzard chose to do this time and it’s ok. I did of course watch the announcement at Gamescom and the panel after so I know there are enough of things to be excited about.

So I’m of course looking forward to BlizzCon. I’ve watched the stream every year and this year won’t be any different. The plan is to buy the virtual ticket, watch the stream with my boyfriend, eat some good food like pizza or tacos, some snacks and stay up all night to watch the whole thing.

There are many things I’m looking forward to learn more about. Legion is number one of course. I can’t wait to learn more about the story, Demon Hunters, dungeons and raids, transmog changes, PvP changes, the artifact weapons, class order halls and I want to hear some music! Another big thing which I have waited for a long time but I’m not sure if they will say anything about at BlizzCon is the Moonkin form model update. I hope we get to see some sketches to see what they got in mind. I would love if they add different features for each race and different color options you can change like hair or skin color.

The second thing I’m looking forward to is the Warcraft movie trailer. It feels like I’ve been waiting forever. Those who attended BlizzCon last year got a sneak peek, but the rest of us haven’t seen anything but the trailer teaser they just posted.

Then there is Overwatch. I haven’t tried it yet and I’m not sure if it’s a game I would like or not because my aim is terrible, but it looks interesting and I would of course like to play it if I got the opportunity.

I’m always looking forward to the contests, especially the costume contest, because it’s fun to see the amazing costumes people have made. I’m disappointed there is no sound panel or art panel this year, those are my favorite panels, but I hope they put in some sound and art in the Legion panels.

What do you hope to see at BlizzCon this weekend? Will you be there in person or are you planning to watch the stream?

BlizzCon 2014

BlizzCon is over for now. It was two days filled with exciting news, tournaments, amazing cosplay and the greatest closing ceremony I’ve seen so far thanks to Metallica! Of course I wish I were there in person but it wasn’t possible so I had to go with the second best option which was the virtual ticket and the live stream. It has become a tradition to watch the BlizzCon live stream now, so my boyfriend and I watched it together. We managed to stay awake during the whole night both nights so we didn’t go to bed until early morning.

Thanks to Tycer (http://twitter.com/tycertank) and DizzyMaMa (http://twitter.com/DizzyMaMa)

This year’s BlizzCon was special because of the 10 year anniversary of World of Warcraft. They showed this special documentary called Looking For Group to celebrate the 10 year anniversary. We learned everything from how they came up with the idea of the game and what they thought players would think of it to learning that they never thought it would get this big and that they once were just a bunch of regular people who loved games like so many of us are. The interviews with all the different developers and employees at Blizzard and the players who play World of Warcraft were so fun to watch because we got to hear so many different stories about their experiences in the game and what it has meant for them through all these years.

World of Warcraft has meant a lot to me because it helped me get through a difficult time, I got new friends, learned a lot, had so much fun and most importantly I met my boyfriend there. You should definitely watch the documentary if you haven’t done so yet, you can find it on here.

I was super excited to see what news Blizzard had for us because I noticed the hole in the schedule and wondered what it might be. Of course I hoped it had something to do with World of Warcraft, like the next expansion or a big patch, but then I thought it would be too early for news like that with Warlords of Draenor not even released yet. Then I thought it might be Warcraft 4, a new StarCraft expansion or that they never really cancelled the project called Titan after all and they were going to finally announce it. So I guess I wasn’t entirely wrong, because they did announce a new StarCraft expansion, Legacy of the Void.

But I was surprised when they announced the new game Overwatch and said that it wasn’t the Titan project, because it was exactly what I thought Titan might be like, a cartoonish shooter set in the future. Though I didn’t really expect them to have come that far with it already. Beta in 2015. The announcement trailer for Overwatch was so good that I would love to see more of them. I like that there are many different characters with different roles, like offence, defence, tank and support, and the characters have so many unique abilities to use. I can’t wait to try the game so I’ve already signed up for the beta and I hope I’ll be one of the lucky ones. Also looking forward to hear the music from the game which Neal Acree, Derek Duke and Sam Cardon among others are working on.  You can learn more about Overwatch on the official website.

HORDE_WALLPAPER_DESKTOP_1600X900

Another thing I was excited to hear more about was the Warcraft movie. When I read “Warcraft Movie Presentation” on the schedule, I was pretty sure it meant a trailer or at least a teaser from the movie, but the only ones who got to see a teaser were the people who actually were there at BlizzCon in person. Super sad and disappointed face. We got to see some of the actors, Orgrim with the Doomhammer and what an orc would look like which was interesting, but I still wish we could have seen something more. It’s a bit annoying because everyone who were there and saw the teaser keep talking about how amazing it was and how excited they are for the movie. So hopefully we’ll get to see one soon.

I don’t doubt that the movie will be good, but Duncan Jones himself said it would be like Avatar and Lord of the Rings, which I’m not sure I’ll believe until I see it because those movies are some of my all time favorite movies and Avatar pretty much blew my mind and I wanted to jump right into the movie the first time I saw it. I do hope the Warcraft movie will be a movie that anyone can watch and enjoy, that they don’t have to be WoW or Warcraft players to understand it. You can get more info about the Warcraft movie by choosing to fight either for the Horde or for the Alliance.

The contests were of course something I looked forward to. It’s always fun to see the amazing costumes, movies, art and music people have made. There were so many great costumes this year so I can’t possibly pick a favorite. But I thought the winners were amazing. I can’t even imagine how much work they must have put into those costumes. I could never make anything like that. I would have liked to dress up as something if I were to attend BlizzCon, for fun, not to win the contest, so I’m not sure I would even enter the contest. I would be happy just walking around and being funny. You can check out the contest winners here.

Chris Hardwick was the perfect host. I knew he would do good as I watch him every week on Talking Dead which he’s hosting. So I hope to see him again next BlizzCon!

I watched the WoW Q&A and kept hoping someone would ask about Moonkin Form and whether or not we will see an update to it in the near future. One year after I asked Tom Chilton the very same question through Twitter at BlizzCon 2013. His answer then was that they have given a lot of love to druids over time with their different forms, so the moonkin will have to wait a little bit longer (read more here). Most people asked very silly questions at this year’s Q&A and none asked about the Moonkin Form. So I asked on Twitter if anyone could ask about it, and Restokin said she would ask someone about it if she found someone to ask and she did. The answer she got was that they might do it after they do the blood elves, but it’s not high on the priority list. So I doubt we’ll see any update in Warlords of Draenor, but I guess it depends on what else they got on their list, maybe we’ll be surprised.

Heroes of the Storm looks great but I’ve never been a big fan of games like that, mostly because my experiences haven’t been very good. The few times I tried similar games I didn’t really know what to do and everything seemed so complicated. I tried my best to learn it but everyone else on my team and our opponents were so much better and I felt so useless and I don’t think the rest of my team enjoyed playing with me. But I think I’ll like it if I play with friends. I haven’t tried Heroes of the Storm yet but I would like to mostly because it has to be more fun when you know the characters and recognize their abilities and I hope they won’t make it as complicated as other similar games.

I had to watch the panel Heroes of the Storm – Sound of the Nexus because I love to learn about how they make the music for the games. It was interesting to hear how they come up with the different sound effects and hear them play the Heroes of the Storm theme which was amazing! You can listen to Heroes of the Storm music here.

The closing ceremony was the best I’ve seen so far! Metallica blew the roof of Anaheim Convention Center and I was headbanging, playing air guitar, air drums and whispering the lyrics in my living room. Whispering because I recently lost my voice after a week of the flu. I was incredible tired when Metallica finally went on stage, but I couldn’t miss it. They played all my favorite songs so I was happy when the show was over and I could go to bed.

I haven’t had time to go back and watch everything I wanted to see from BlizzCon yet, but I will do it now the next days. It was also very fun to read tweets and see pictures from the people who were at BlizzCon and tweets from people who like me watched the stream at home.

Thank you, Blizzard for yet another amazing BlizzCon and happy 10 year WoW anniversary!

Did you watch the BlizzCon live stream or were you there in person? What were you most excited about?

No update to the Moonkin Form

It started in Wrath of the Lich King and patch 3.2 when Blizzard announced the new Cat and Bear Form. I assumed Moonkin Form would be up next together with Travel Form and Aquatic Form. Cataclysm was announced and we were told that trolls could be druids and I immediately thought of Moonkin Form update again, but Cataclysm was released and we only got a new Flight Form for worgen and troll druids. Again I assumed Moonkin Form would be next.

Time went on and Mists of Pandaria was released together with new Travel Form and Aquatic Form. But what about Moonkin Form? We got a glyph. A glyph which makes us able to look like we’re out of form when we actually are in Moonkin Form. Do they think that the glyph is what they gave to us and that we’re happy with it? I wonder if they really think that it’s right to update everything except the Moonkin Form, why not complete all the druid forms and be done with it? I’ve been a Moonkin since the day my first druid hit level 40 and was able to put a talent point in Moonkin Form. Back then it was adorable and funny, and it kind of still is, but I wish it looked less pixelated now when everything else looks so smooth and beautiful.

Now they’re updating all the original race models, which is also about time. Even the Draenei and Blood Elf. But what’s left after that? Moonkin Form.

This weekend at BlizzCon I hoped someone would ask about it in the Q & A, but none did, so I tweeted my question to Kat Hunter Metzen and I was happy to get an answer even if it wasn’t the answer I had hoped for.

Oh, man, we have given a lot of love to druids over time
with their different forms, so the moonkin will have to wait
a little bit longer

I guess they will update it some time in the future, if not in Warlords of Draenor, then maybe the next one, or the one after that, I won’t hold my breath.

BlizzCon 2013

The BlizzCon weekend is over, I hope everyone’s had an awesome time both those who actually attended it in person and those, who like me, watched it live with the Virtual Ticket Stream. I wanted to write this post after day one, but I was so extremely tired as it was morning over here when the show ended and I just didn’t find time or energy for it yesterday after day two either. This won’t be a post summarizing everything that happened on BlizzCon this year, I just want to mention some of my favorite parts and moments of the show. I assume that everyone already know about the big announcements, if not this will contain spoilers.

I think this was the fourth time I watched the Virtual Ticket stream. It’s so great to be able to see what you want and when you want. But the sound could have been so much better during the panels on stage and music performances. It was a great experience to watch BlizzCon this year because it was the first time I watched it with my boyfriend and I also tweeted a lot and read other tweets during the show which made it a lot more entertaining.

I can only imagine how amazing it must be to actually be there in person. I hope that one day it’ll be my turn, maybe next year, I don’t know. It’s not cheap to travel from Norway or Sweden to Los Angeles and if I first travel that far, I’d want to stay there a while longer, at least two weeks because I’ve never been there before and there is so much I’d like to see. I might need some help and advice from some of you who’ve been there or live there if I decide to go. And it would have been great to meet up with other Europeans who’s going and maybe travel together.

I’m not sure how many of those who were at BlizzCon or watching the stream who know In Flames, a Swedish metal band, but we did hear them this weekend. Some parts of their songs were used as an intro several times during the show which I thought was awesome because they’re one of my favorite bands. One of the songs they used is called Pinball Map, check it out here.

We knew they were going to announce a new WoW expansion and it was either something with “The Dark Below” or “Warlords of Draenor” but I thought the first one sounded much more interesting because it made me think of Old Gods and it would seem natural to go there after what’s happened in MoP, but I didn’t think “The Dark Below” would be a very good title. To me “Warlords of Draenor” sounded more like a TCG card deck or something. But it wasn’t. At first when they announced it I thought “Hmm, well, this looks promising”, but I’m much more excited about the expansion after I’ve seen and heard so much about it! So many changes it’ll be like a new game!

Warlords of Draenor: What I’m looking forward to the most

The new character models, especially the tauren and the troll as my main will be either troll or tauren depending on which I think looks the best when the models are finished.

The garrisons which sounds very interesting but I’m still unsure how it will affect my gold income if anyone can put up an enchanting building and craft their own enchants. But the part where you’re able to invite your friends to visit sounds fun.

It’ll also be awesome to go back to Draenor and learn more about what happened there, how life there is, more about some of the legendary orc characters and the draenei.

The PvP changes with the reward changes and Ashran the new world PvP zone

The Draenor zones look absolutely stunning and I can’t wait to explore them

New hidden treasures and secret areas to explore is something I can’t wait to check out

I also love that they will create a tab for heirlooms, toys and maybe tabards, it’ll clear out a lot of bag space

I’m also excited about the new changes to stats and gear, but a little sceptical to the removal of reforging

Balance druid level 100 talents:

Touch of Elune: Balance (Sunfall) Passive – Entering Solar Eclipse will transform your Starfall spell into Sunfall and reset its cooldown.
Will of Malfurion: Balance (Zenith) Channeled – Targets all enemies within 60 yards and accelerates the caster’s Moonfire and sunfire effects, causing them to deal damage at 400% of the normal rate for 4 sec.
Might of Malorne: Balance (Equinox) Passive – Lunar and Solar Eclipse now last until the other is triggered, instead of ending at 0 Balance Power.

Thoughts on Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm and Diablo III

Heartstone: I haven’t played Hearhtstone yet.. At first it seemed very simple and not so interesting because I’ve never been a fan of playing card games, but now when I’ve seen and read more about it I think it’s something I’ll enjoy, especially because it’ll be available on iPhone.

Heroes of the Storm: I’ve never been a big fan of games like this, but it looks a lot more fun when it’s heroes I already know so I’ll definitely try it

Diablo III: I’m really looking forward to the expansion Reaper of Souls because there are so many great changes coming up. Like the removal of the auction house, loot changes, adventure mode, the crusader and new content.

I loved watching

The art panel: I’ve always been interested in learning more about how they create the game. How they come up with the ideas, how it goes from concept to finished. It’s was fun to see the new character models, what an improvement! Can’t wait to see the troll models. But I’m a bit disappointed that we won’t see an update to Moonkin Form this expansion, more about that in a separate post.

Sound panel: The music in WoW has amazed me since I started playing, I listen to it in-game and on my iPhone or iTunes. I’m so impressed by everything the sound team does but especially the composers who write the music, to me they are geniuses, and I’m not missing out on a chance to learn more about how they work and how they think. And.. Great news, everyone! Jason Hayes is back at Blizzard! And his band Critical Hit performed Blizzard music pieces live which was absolutely amazing! Seeing them play music like that inspired me and I really feel like starting to play an instrument again. Check out their website or Facebook page. And by the way: You can download new Warlords of Draenor music on the new website!

Movie contest: This year’s movie contest was great, so I want to share my two favorites by <AFK> Pl@yers and Patrick James. The first one almost made me cry a little bit and the second made me laugh really hard, maybe because I’d been up for too long…

Costume contest: Oh my, there were so many fantastic costumes this year! My favorites were the troll druid in cat form, the tuskarr, pandaren and training dummy.
