Leveling in Battle For Azeroth

I hope everyone’s had a great first week (and a half?) in Battle For Azeroth! This week’s blog challenge by Z and Cinder is How do you level in Battle for Azeroth?

My tradition has always been to stay up all night on expansion release and play till I get too tired to stay awake. Grown up life doesn’t always care about my traditions, so this year was different but I still made it work. I didn’t have any plans on the 14th, but I had my first day of college on the 15th and had to get up early.

So my plan was to sleep for as long as I could and then pull an all nighter on the 14th and get up early the 15th. Sounds like a perfect plan, right? Play all night and day on release. Well, yes, but pulling an all nighter is so much harder to do now as a 28-year-old than what it was 10 years ago. And I don’t think I’ve ever stayed up for this long on expansion day before and leveled to max in one go (with small breaks). I think I was awake for 30 hours and it took me around 15 hours to level from 110 to 120.

I play Horde and had already leveled through the zones on the beta and knew the stories and the quests, so my plan was to rush through everything pretty fast. I started off in Vol’dun and continued to Nazmir and then Zuldazar, but I also did the war campaign foothold quests in Kul Tiras when I could. Dungeon queues were very long, so I only did one.

I enjoyed all the zones, but I think my favorite is Zuldazar because the zone is green and beautiful, has many interesting stories besides the main storyline and the quests are different and fun. But the screenshot is actually from Nazmir where you can be a frog and lick people to death.

We leveled pretty fast in the start when we were two, but it was much harder when I was alone. There weren’t always other people on the quests, so I had to kill many mobs alone which took a while. As the crazy Moonfire spam and Starfall loving moonkin I am, I did of course try to pull a ton of mobs and AOE them down, which didn’t always work out because the mobs hit hard. I didn’t die while leveling, but came really close and had to flee a few times to save myself.

It might not sound very fun to rush through the quests, but it was fun because even though I didn’t stop to read all the quests and dialogue, I still remembered most from the beta and skimmed through them quick so I knew who, where and why. There were also many new cinematics which were pretty awesome and made the storyline so much more exciting.

I would like to level an Alliance character next because the Kul Tiras zones look amazing and I haven’t leveled through them on Alliance side yet, just a few quests on the Horde side and world quests, but I want to know the Alliance story. I will of course have to slow down and read all the quests then, which I always do the first (or sometimes second time) because I like to know what’s going on and why.

How was your leveling experience in Battle For Azeroth and which zone has been your favorite so far?

Changes and preparations

Right now it’s past 9 pm here and less than three hours left until midnight and Battle for Azeroth! I’ve spent the last days preparing my druid, so I’ve cleaned the bags and the bank for the first time in years, sold off stuff I don’t need, completed quests and cleared the quest log.

I have also done something else which I have thought about for a long time. I race changed my druid from troll to highmountain tauren! My druid has been a troll since the update that made trolls able to be druids 8 years ago. I was never a big fan of trolls, I just wanted to be an orange moonkin. The tauren has always been my favorite race and my first character, my warrior, was of course a male tauren. I was very excited about the highmountain tauren becoming a playable race because they are tauren, got a solid story and look like a moose with their big antlers.

I have of course completed the pre-expansion event which I have a few thoughts about. The storyline leading up to Battle for Azeroth has been interesting, but I expected more of an event like this. There hasn’t been much to do, except for the new but short questline every week and some daily quests with decent rewards for characters with low item level. This event was nothing compared to the previous pre-expansion events, my favorite being the pre Wrath of the Lich King event where you could turn into a zombie and infect other players.

I did participate in the Battle for Azeroth beta, but I’m still excited about the expansion and can’t wait to see, hear and read everyone elses reactions and thoughts about it.

Bye, the Broken Isles and Legion! I’m off to Zandalar and Kul Tiras to fight some Alliance and save Azeroth!

Are you prepared?

Pengling sledding and painting goat

I was exploring Tiragarde Sound when I came across the Pengling Sledding Champion on a mountain near Bridgeport and Kennings Lodge. He lets you ride on his back and race down the glacier from a speeding yeti. I couldn’t find a video of it, so I made one.

It is part of the world quest Slippery Slopes on level 120 if the limited info on Wowhead is correct. This reminds me so much of the penguin race in Super Mario 64 which I played a lot back in 1997, I just wish this race was longer cause it’s so fun but too short.

I also discovered this goat with a paintbrush in his mouth. His canvas is still blank, so he hasn’t painted anything yet. I tried sitting on the stool next to him, hoping he would paint me, but sadly nothing happened.

Have you discovered anything fun in Battle for Azeroth?

It’s beta time!

Battle for Azeroth was revealed as the next World of Warcraft expansion at BlizzCon almost 6 months ago, and as many others I opted in for the beta, hoping to get picked for my 6th beta. Then, as you might have read in last week’s post, IRL won. IRL combined with lack of interest for the game and the discovery of other games. I didn’t have a subscription, so I just bought a WoW Token if I felt like playing for a month, and I have barely played since November.

Then the Battle for Azeroth alpha started and it became interesting to follow the updates. I thought Blizzard would do as they usually do and invite well-known streamers and similar people first, which they probably did. Then I got invited to the alpha in March, which I never expected as I didn’t even have an active subscription and had barely played for half a year. Maybe some of my feedback from the previous betas were useful and contributed to me being picked? Or maybe, and most likely, it’s just completely random who gets picked. I know I didn’t have time to play all the previous betas as much as I wanted, so can’t say that I contributed much on all of them. But I always reported the bugs I found and gave feedback where I thought it was necessary.

My first thought when I got the alpha was that I have to play it now when I’ve been lucky enough to get picked. I was of course very excited to explore the new zones, see the changes to balance druids and learn more about the storyline. So I installed it and started off in Zuldazar which is a beautiful zone with a great variety of quests and quest hubs. I haven’t completed all the quests in the zone because I spend a lot of time running around and looking at everything, zooming in and taking screenshots. Bugs were also discovered and had to be replicated and reported. I also tried to swim around the whole continent but stopped when I got denied entrance to Vol’dun and teleported away because the zone wasn’t opened yet.

Last week Battle for Azeroth went into beta which caused all character to get deleted. It was a fresh start, and after completing the exciting scenarios in Undercity and Stormwind, I decided to finally check out Vol’dun. I met the cutest race ever, the Vulpera, and two camels called Dot and Dolly. One of the Vulpera told me to take care of myself, cause no one else will, so I will keep that in mind when I wander about in the desolate Vol’dun.

I haven’t completed this zone yet either, but it has been fun so far. Like in Zuldazar, there are many small quest hubs, so you move around quite often which makes it more interesting cause you don’t get bored with one specific area. My goal is to finish this zone soon, but it will take me a while as I don’t want to rush through it.

Do you have beta access yet?

Check out my tips on how to be a good beta tester.

Battle for Azeroth: How to be a good beta tester

The Battle for Azeroth beta has begun! Players selected to participate will receive an email invitation, but be aware of phishing attempts. Log in to your Battle.net Launcher and check the dropdown Region/Account menu for Beta: Battle for Azeroth. If you’re interested in participating, opt in on your beta profile.

Most players are very excited about the beta and are hoping to get access. They talk about what they would like to do if they get access, things they want to see and play. But have you ever thought of what’s expected of you as a beta tester and what you should do to become a good beta tester? First I think you should ask yourself these two questions: Why do you want to be a beta tester? What do you think makes you a good beta tester?

I’ve been lucky enough to get invited to all of the betas since I started playing during the Burning Crusade. Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Legion and now Battle for Azeroth. I won the Wrath of the Lich King beta key in a contest, but I think I’ve been selected randomly for the rest. Sometimes I got access early, in alpha, and other times later in the beta. At first I saw it as a chance to get a sneak peek and play the game before everyone else, but then I learned that there is so much more you should do. I felt important and happy to be one of those who got to test it and give feedback to polish and improve the game before it went live.

I’ve read through some websites and forums, gathered and written down what I think are the most important things to keep in mind if you are going to participate in the beta test.

First off, what is a beta test

Game testing is a process for quality control of a software. The primary function of game testing is the discovery and reporting of software defects, also known as bugs. A beta test is usually the second test (after alpha) and the first test by the actual customers. Beta testers are needed because the designers are probably so used to their game that they’re very likely to overlook many things that fresh pair of eyes won’t.

Sometimes there is an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) you need to agree to in order to participate in testing, but not for Battle for Azeroth. This means you are free to talk about, write about, stream and share screenshots from the beta.

Who can be a beta tester

A veteran player isn’t necessary a better beta tester than a new player. Introducing previously uninvolved testers with fresh perspective may help identify new bugs. Blizzard wants a wide variety of testers: varied, locations, age, experience and game interest. You don’t need the newest computer, the best graphics card etc. Blizzard wants to make sure that the game works on everyone’s computer. They want a variety of testers with all kinds of different hardware, not just people with the latest stuff.

What to keep in mind

  • You shouldn’t sign up for the beta if you don’t plan on actually testing and giving feedback. Many people sign up for the beta not to test it but to play the game and see if it’s something they would like to buy
  • The beta is not a demo to complete content before anyone else
  • Nothing is final before it’s live
  • Being a beta tester is more like a job than something you do just cause it’s fun
  • The beta test is designed to find bugs, issues that have made it past internal testing
  • You are responsible for checking that the game works, is easy to use, has actions that make sense, and contains fun gameplay
  • If the game was perfect, they wouldn’t need people beta testing
  • The more bugs that get reported in the beta, the less there will be when it goes live
  • Visit and read the official beta forums
  • Follow Blizzard’s updates on what they want you to focus testing on
  • Test as many features as possible in as many ways as possible
  • Consult with other testers for answers to potential problems you may be experiencing
  • Support creative new approaches to abilities, spells and other changes to the game
  • Instead of complaining out loud or in the chat, report your problem by using the feedback survey or the official beta testing forums, and be constructive
  • You can still give feedback on the quests, zones, dungeons etc even if you don’t find any bugs
  • Remember that all characters in Blizzard beta tests are wiped from the servers before the final game. Carrying characters over from the beta to the final game would give beta testers an unfair advantage and there are numerous technical issues as the beta client is not the same as the final game version
  • What is your reward? A sense of accomplishment. You helped to polish a game you enjoy. And a sneak peek at the game is the reward for most. But previous beta invites and good feedback might increase your chances of getting picked again, who knows?

What to expect

There will be frequent disconnects, and the realm may be up for a few minutes at a time as new content is added. Do not expect the entire expansion to be available. Expect things to be broken, graphics to be missing or placeholders.

Bugs

Testing requires creative gameplay to discover often subtle bugs. Some bugs are easy to document, but many require a detailed description so a developer can replicate or find the bug. Do stuff Blizzard never intended for players to do. Because a player will do so by accident and cause an issue. Players also have ways of doing stuff the developers never thought of doing. It is better that it happens in beta than on live.

Bugs can be…

  • art glitches
  • animation errors
  • logic errors
  • level bugs
  • quest items not working
  • random dismounts
  • falling through the world
  • getting stuck
  • damage and class/mob balance bugs
  • lore error
  • + much more

I remember I’ve been able to fly indoors or getting dismounted from my flying mount in the air when flying above buildings. I’ve also fallen through worlds, got stuck in walls or behind invisible walls and stuck in cracks in the ground. I’ve been unable to complete quests, pick up items, missing NPCs, NPCs missing bodyparts and NPCs who yell over and over again so the whole zone gets a headache. I’ve also seen spelling mistakes in the quest info and NPC speech, and tons of graphic bugs.

How to report bugs
As a beta tester, you’re expected to report the bugs you encounter in the game. Blizzard has beta forums for feedback and bug reporting. You can also report bugs or issues ingame. Once you’ve found and identified a bug, you should write a brief report so Blizzard knows that there is a problem and can fix it before release. Good bug reports can be read quickly, easily understood and be recreated even by someone who is playing the beta for the first time. A good bug report makes it much easier to get the bugs fixed as fast as possible.

Make sure you can repeat the bug
What caused the bug? What where you doing? Write down what you did before you encountered the bug and try to make it happen again. Check the forums to see if the bug you found has already been reported. Sometimes there is a post or a list of known bugs, bugs they already know about and are working on. If you got more information to add about a bug someone else has already reported, just write a reply to their post.

Information to give
Make a note of the time and the place that the bug occurred and what you were doing when it happened. Sometimes it can also be important to write down which class, spec, level and race you are. The beta build you are using can also be of importance. It can be found in the lower left of the login screen. You want to include your computer’s information if you’re experiencing graphic issues, crashes etc. Write down exactly what the bug did. Did you get disconnected, a screen freeze, game crash or an error message? Did you character get stuck? Maybe you fell through the world? Or are you unable to pick up or use a certain item? The more detail the better. Go back and see if you can cause the bug to occur again.

How to recreate the bug
Write down the steps needed to recreate the bug so the developers can recreate it and see what happens. This can be which spell you used, where you walked, which item you used and where, which NPC you spoke to etc.

Writing a bug report post
If you find multiple bugs, make one post for each bug you find. Use a tag in the subject of your post to make it easier to know what kind of bug it is. Like [Quest bug], [Spell bug] etc.

If you can remember and do all or some of the points above, you’re on the right way to become a good beta tester! Good luck and enjoy!
